Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb in cooperation with Tirena Theatre and Croatian Center for Drama Education, is organising the 2nd international art and science symposium
Encouraging Quality In Drama Creativity
The symposium takes place in Zagreb, from 20nd to 22th of September 2018 at the Faculty of Teacher Education, Savska Street 77.
First call
We invite advocates and critics, practitioners and theoreticians, experienced ones as well as newcomers – anybody who has ever wondered how to evaluate the quality of eduactional drama work, to join us at the 2nd Drama Education Symposium. The issue of quality will be the focus of all our activities during this three-day gathering.
Previous symposium’s main issue was the position of drama education in educational institutions and wider, in society. After the symposium, the purpose of which was an improvement of drama education’s position and the networking of drama pedagogues who often feel lonely and isolated in their communities, we have initiatited certain actions. During many conversations, official and unofficial, the topic of quality repeatingly appeared – how do we evaluate quality, how do we raise and recognize it? Which parameters are used to assess improvement? What criteria is to be followed? That is why we have chosen this topic for our 2nd symposium.
However, the quality as a topic is too complex to take on during only one three-day gathering so we have decided to aim our focus on a single segment of drama education: the drama creativity; and to consider closely the issue of quality in that segment.
The symposium poses many questions:
- How to evaluate the quality/success of the school play?
- Who evaluates the quality of plays produced by drama studios and how is it evaluated?
- How to lead a conversation about school plays?
- How to recognize the process in the final product -t he performance? Does the success of a school play depend on the recognition of the pedagogical process? Should it depend on it?
- Who evaluates the quality/ success of the school plays? What is the profile of an expert who evaluates such quality/ success?
- How to improve the competencies of drama pedagogues who work with children in the field of drama creativity (in schools and in drama studios)?
The symposium will be organized to address these key issues through three different approaches: the practical, the professional-scientific and the workshop approach. The programme framework of the symposium was designed with these approaches as a starting point:
Day 1:
- Performances of school plays and conversations about the process
- Half-day workshop: How to have a conversation about a play with children/ young people? How to evaluate/estimate the quality of a play performed by children/young people?
Day 2:
- Scientific and expert part of the symposium
- Round table / discussions in groups about children’s drama creativity festivals (such as Lidrano)
Day 3:
- all day workshops that offer skill improvement for participants working with children in the field of drama education
Forms of participation:
- Participant (in discussion and workshops, listener at the scientific part of the symposium, audience)
- The application of the expert and scientific work for the expert-scientific part of the symposium: the submitted work should address one of the topics related to the main theme of the conference and the issues that the symposium directly or indirectly addresses. Submitted work can be conceived as a professional/scientific reasearch paper or reflection on experience. Papers that pass the review will be published in the Symposium proceedings.
