FIRST CALL: HOW DRAMA IN EDUCATION ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF TEACHING

Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb in cooperation with Croatian Centre for Drama Education and Tirena Theatre from Zagreb, is organising the 3rd International Art and Science Symposium

 HOW DRAMA IN EDUCATION ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF TEACHING

The conference will take place in Zagreb 29 – 31 August, 2019

at the Faculty of Teacher Education, Savska 77, Zagreb, Croatia

FIRST CALL

We invite all classroom and subject teachers, preschool teachers, professors and all who use drama as a teaching method (or would like to learn about it) to join us in the 3rd Symposium on Drama Education. At our first Symposium in 2017, we discussed the position of Drama education within education and cultural institutions. The large number of participants seemed to have enjoyed many of the offered workshops. While discussing the status of Drama education, we wondered how to exchange experiences and promote practices portrayed by excellence. Our second Symposium was therefore slightly more “serious” and intensified in the direction of our own practice offering longer, more thorough workshops embraced under the title Encouraging quality in drama creativity. We invited participants to offer a professional and research position on their thoughts and practices and present them in the form of written papers. Therefore, the second symposium comprised research and professional presentations and intensely focused on issues of quality education in drama, evaluation of plays performed by children and the customary LiDraNo. Over 20 professional and research papers which have undergone the peer-review process have been published in the conference proceedings along with notes from the symposium (available on-line at: http://dramskapedagogija.ufzg.hr/). Take a look, read, seek inspiration… The 3rd Symposium which we are announcing will focus on the place and possibilities of Drama education in school and kindergarten programs. Specifically, it will deal with Drama in education, a form of drama whose main goal is to teach and influence the development and growth of children and youth.

The Symposium will raise some important questions:

  • Where is the place of drama education in regular teaching in school? A separate subject or teaching method? (Should we advocate establishing a separate subject?)
  • In what ways do drama techniques and methods enhance the teaching process?
  • Does drama always contribute to the teaching process?
  • How to assess the achievement of drama work in the classroom? Better acquisition of content? A breakthrough into other or different ways of thinking and experiencing?
  • How to evaluate students’ achievements in drama education?
  • How to teach various teaching content using drama-pedagogy methods?

The Symposium will offer:

  • Plenaries by invited lecturers dealing with the main topic from different aspects;
  • Professional – research part of the Symposium where participants will present and discuss their work;
  • Workshops by invited professionals;
  • Workshops by Symposium participants;
  • Plays performed by children and youth.
